Nearly Wordless Wednesday – Calypso Orchid

I found a Calypso bulbosa var. occidentalis (Calypso Orchid, or Venus’s Slipper) the other day! It’s the Pacific Northwest’s only native orchid, and is only found in undisturbed areas with lots of thick, moist moss. It’s a terrestrial orchid, not an epiphytic orchid. We don’t have those, unfortunately. I’ll let the photo do the rest of the talking.

I love a challenge. Whether it is germinating seeds from exciting new plants (at least exciting and new for me), keeping and raising fish, poison dart frogs, and ornamental shrimp, or navigating new areas of the world without maps or guides, I am interested in it.
